Planning a simple Western Theme Party

Western Theme parties are very popular for corporate, college or social events. They can be as simple or as extravagant as you wish depending on your budget and how much work you want to put into them.

Start everything off with the invitations - make them wanted posters and tell everyone to wear blue jeans and checkered shirts to fit right into the theme.

Giveaways/Attire - Cowboy hats are about the most inexpensive way to set the theme. Starting at about $1.50 each for straw hats, you can put one on each of your guests and everyone knows that the party theme is Western. Additional items can include bandanas or sheriffs badges. You can even print up sticker badges if you want to personalize or save money. www.bobbyk.makesparties.com

Decorations - You can buy decorations for the room at any party store, but many times they don't look real authentic. Stay away from cowboy cutouts but use more generic pieces like cowboy boots or wagon wheels. Maybe some of your friends have wagon wheels outside their homes that you can borrow. Adding balloons is another inexpensive way to fill a room with themed items. Want to really be authentic? - add some bales of hay, barrels and potato sacks (filled with newspaper).

Entertainment - Next comes the music. Country Western music is universal now and you can add a mix of old school artists (Johnny Cash, Buck Owens, Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn) along with new favorites (Garth Brooks, Randy Travis, Brooks & Dunn, Shania Twain). Hire a DJ for the best and most flexible approach or use a stereo system with a variety of CDs.

Activities - Activities should always include line dancing, nothing too difficult. After line dances, you can have fun with "lasso" contests (think bull roping) using actual rope or hula hoops. Get some black or brown Frisbees and have a "cow pie toss".

All of these ideas won't set you back much, but are a good start to a fun Western Themed Party!
