Bounce Houses: Parent Responsibility

With the recent notoriety of bounce house accidents this summer, finger pointing has been prevalent. Accusations are made that inflatable bounce houses are not staked properly, are not inspected or maintained, or that operators are not paying attention.

Safe Inflatables for Kids

Ziff Law recently used Bobby K Entertainment as a resource for their latest blog post on safely using inflatables, moonwalks, and bouncehouses. The New York Accident Attorneys wrote this post because of the recent accidents involving improperly installed bounce houses and inflatables.

Carnival Game Rental

One of the greatest joys of attending a carnival or fair is when you walk away with the big prize from a game booth. Some participants spend hundreds of dollars for a stuffed dinosaur that they can carry around the park, getting envious stares and a sore back.

For company parties, school field days, or college spring flings, choosing the right games and prizes is a challenge. Make the games too easy and you run out of prizes quickly; make them too challenging and you frustrate your players while giving away very little.

A good mix of challenging games with a few desirable prizes along with the “win every time” games with lots of little prizes is sometimes the answer. From Bobby K Entertainment, you can order games that are difficult (like a bottle standup or a magic wand game) or games that have a “building” challenge where prizes are awarded for the number of items knocked down or points scored.  Easy games include fish ponds, lollipop pulls, and duck ponds.

When it comes to prizes, unless you have a super budget, don’t expect those large animals or other items like that. If “large” is what you would like, make a visual impact with inflated toys. A three foot inflated hammer is cheap compared to a three foot stuffed plush monkey.

Mixing up the prizes is a good idea, also, starting with the inexpensive token prizes such as stickers, coloring books, and small plastic animals. Midline items include squirt guns, balls, and small plush animals or characters. Premium items can include the inflatables and some large plush animals but be sure to consider some novelty pieces like skateboards, bat and ball sets, or glow pieces and hats.

Most booths are designed to hand out prizes directly and have their choice of prizes displayed. Another method is to use tickets at each booth with more tickets awarded for more difficult games. One booth can be designated a prize booth and winners can redeem their tickets for the prize of their choice.

Backyard Party Fun and Ideas

As summer arrives, many parents contact us looking for cheap ways to rent bounce houses for their birthday parties or backyard barbeques. Unfortunately, until an accident happens, safety is a minor concern.

Every season, there are accidents reported.

In the link above, you see an apparently unsecured bounce house picked up by the wind and thrown into a telephone pole. Luckily, no one was hurt.

Many times, parents request to pick up the inflatables and set them up themselves. Even though there are instructions on how to do this, there is no supervision to make sure that the job is done correctly. The best way to rent an inflatable is with attendants who know what the rules are for safe play.

There is nothing scarier than a giant slide with ten children on the top rocking it back and forth to see how far they can get the inflatable to lean. When a child falls off, the minimum is a broken limb. Proper supervision prevents this from happening.

If you do not want to go the expense of a supervised inflatable, at least hire a company that delivers and sets up and properly secures the bounce item, either with stakes, sandbags, or water. Never allow an inflatable to be secured to something that can move, like a motor vehicle.

Once an item is delivered and secured, do not try to move it and reattach the stakes or weights. Every inflatable has several tether points and some have to be run longer than others and in certain patterns for maximum hold. This may not be obvious to the homeowner.

A major factor is the weather. Most often you will see rain coming or feel winds picking up. Every inflatable has a wind restriction, the point at which you cannot safely operate it, even if properly secured. Make sure you learn what that is and pay attention. If the edges of the inflatable start picking up or the high parts lean over with the wind pressure, get everyone off and deflate the inflatable by turning off the fan.

While fun is important, safety keeps everyone around for another day of fun!

Whether you are a non-profit, school, or corporation, everyone is feeling the economic pinch these days and wants to figure out how to get more for less. Entertainment is one area that, when cut, can affect the entire event’s success! However, creative cutting can result in a successful event AND huge savings.

Planning for Playthrough on Inflatables

One of the most frustrating aspects of planning a party is when you get the most exciting items you can find only to have your guests complain about long wait times. Think of how many times you have gone to a theme park and been frustrated with a 1-2 hour wait for the most popular rides and attractions!
